Why is coaching vital to project manager development?

Traditional project management training, and most of the PM accreditations, focus on the technical elements of project management - the tools, methods and techniques that are unique to project management.  We believe that this does not do justice to the notion that project management is characterized by leading a team of individuals who typically do not report to the project manager, and who may have other corporate or personal priorities. Thus the PM has far greater need for expertise in developing influence in the absence of authority than any other management discipline. 

We believe therefore that project management demands a socio-political competence to complement the more widely recognised technical elements.  While training is suitable for developing technical competence, training is not sufficient for the development of socio-political competencies and an alternative mechanism is needed in this area.
